Rebecca, I love and admire your vulnerability and honesty with your writing. It is so refreshing to read the honest truth about writing and pursuing any creative endeavour. There is so much noise and temptation out there that will guide and tease you to question who you are writing for. You hit the nail on the head about privilege and percentages of people who are really able to write with integrity and achieve financial wealth. I believe in the possibility but don't want to sell my soul and agree with your perspective.
OnBeing is one of my favourite podcasts, I listened to the Mary Oliver episode and adored her perspective as I do her work. But you are right in today's world marketing is a necessary evil if you want visibility. My recent realisation and mantra is, "Follow the joy and satisfaction" because at the end of the day as you highlighted if your basic needs are met, that's all that really matters.
BTW, did I say how much I loved your post, fantastic write. Thank you for sharing.
As always I am touched by your support and thoughtful comments. It's nice to that heart and understanding in what feels like, as you say a world of noise and temptation. I don't know if what I say is right or accurate, but it feels that way for me. I have to keep pulling myself back and putting into perspective what is right for me, and if it can make the slightest ripple of difference in this world.
I think the beauty of writing is that it is in some way timeless. If we can keep tapping into that eternal human need to communicate truthfully and authentically, I believe we can dodge the minefields and traps of believing that there is any kind of "ultimate truth" or reality. That sounds a bit contradictory, but it makes sense to me, hehe.
Thanks as always Jesse, for reading, and your generous comments.
